Sulfates are used in cleaning products as a foaming agent. They are the ingredient that makes shampoos lather. They are a great cleaning agent, which is why they are the same ingredient we find in dish washing liquid! While sulfates are great in cleaning, they go too far – they strip away the moisture and natural oils that our hair needs. Sulfates are used in traditional off-the-shelf shampoos because they are cheap and effective in cleaning – but they are too harsh for healthy haircare. Parabens are used in haircare products to help extend their shelf life. But while they are effective as preservatives, they can cause problems like scalp irritation, drying, and even hair loss. Also, parabens are xenoestrogens, which means they can mimic estrogen. Since our scalp is one of the most absorbent parts of our skin, parabens could enter the blood stream from our scalp. Research shows that parabens were often found in the urine and blood stream of people using products with parabens. When parabens enter our bloodstream, they could potentially cause hormone imbalances. On the bright side, paraben levels in the body can drastically drop after just three days without use.
