What is Protein Overload?
This is when too much of the good thing becomes harmful.
Protein overload happens when our hair has too much protein and not enough moisture to balance it. The protein-moisture balance is lost.
Our hair needs a balance of moisture and protein to be healthy.
Signs of protein overload:
Hair becomes dry, stiff, and straw-like.
Don’t worry – this can be fixed by introducing more moisture into hair 😉
How to fix protein overload:
- Apply step 2 (conditioner) generously to hair
Use a Tangle Teezer (See below image) to detangle hair and ensure coverage of each hair strand
Let the conditioner sit for a while for the hair to be nourished.
When rinsing, squeeze hair to help conditioner penetrate hair shaft. This action is called "squish to condish" 😂 (See below GIF)
Don't completely rinse, leave a little conditioner on the hair.
- Apply step 3 (hydration leave-in) generously onto hair. Use a Tangle Teezer to promote even distribution and increase coverage of each hair strand.
- Skip step 4 (protein leave-in) for several washes. (For wavy hair, scrunch hair upwards directly after step 3, without protein leave-in.)
As you experiment, you’ll understand the need of your hair more and find a routine that works well for you. 🫶
For example, if you wash your hair every day or every other day and your hair needs only little protein, you may find that using step 4 only once a week as a booster or twice a week works best for you. In other words, you don't have to use step 4 after every wash.

Tangle Teezer
Tangle Teezers have flexible two-tiered teeth that removes knots and reduces breakage as we detangle our hair.
Squish to Condish
Here is how we can squish the conditioner into our hair when rinsing.
